I'm sure a lot of you reading this comic are largely unaware of the bigger themes at play in Running on Empty. What am I talking about? I'm talking about twists and turns, fragments of fiction that bounce off reality and echo into fantasy. Specifically, the relationship between Dan, Jake, and D-Man is not quite what you'd think, and I'm not calling them gay either. And (obviously) Mr. Dark is a prelude to a larger story that extends over two decades into the future.
This week, we take a look into that future, focusing on a soldier who's been fighting in a perpetual war since age seven. What thoughts bounce through his head? Where will these dark impulses lead? Why should you give a damn?
Sometimes funny, sometimes sad or sinister... always interesting. That's Running on Empty. The story of my life. And, in many ways, the story of yours as well.
...And you thought this was all about dick and fart jokes.
